Congress designated the Devils Backbone Wilderness in 1980. On the northern boundary are campsites and a canoe launch. Three springs in the area flow into the North Fork of the White River, which transits the area. The area is ideal for day-hikes and overnight backpacking. Horses are allowed no motorized/mechanical transportation allowed. Thirteen miles of trails (rated Moderate) follow the Backbone (and four other ridges), dropping off into surrounding forested hollows. Elevations reach from 1,020 feet at the highest point to 680 at the lowest. Additional parking is available apart from the campsite.Ī fee of $6 will be charged for the third vehicle.A long, narrow ridge-known to early settlers as The Devils Backbone-is the main attraction in this 6,687-acre Wilderness. Parking is available for either 2 vehicles or 1 recreational vehicle per campsite. Devil's Head Campground will have a signed turn off. Turn south onto Rampart Range Road for 10 miles. Turn west on Highway 67 for 10 miles to the junction with Rampart Range Road. Denver/Morrison is approximately a 1.5 hour drive north of the campground via Highway 85. Sedalia is 20 miles northeast, along Highway 67. The following restrictions apply to this campground: Fees are payable by cash, check, or money order. Day use: $7.00/per day if not camping overnight.Camping: $23.00/per site/per night. Two (2) vehicles or one (1) RV per site is included in the camping fee.This campground is strictly a first-come, first-served campground. A target date is April 1, but weather conditions may delay opening until late-May.
The road reopens when conditions are favorable for summer recreation. Seasonal closure information: Rampart Range road is closed annually by December 1 and remains closed throughout the winter.
